Cast Announced For Jesus Christ Superstar At The Barbican!
Performances begin 4 July.
After spellbinding audiences at the Regent's Park Open Air Theatre last year, the Timothy Sheader directed Olivier award-winning revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's iconic musical heads to the Barbican this summer.
The cast for Jesus Christ Superstar's return will feature Robert Tripolino as Jesus, Ricardo Afonso as Judas, Sallay Garnett as Mary, X-Factor winner Matt Cardle as Pilate, Cavin Cornwall as Caiaphas and Nathan Amzi as Annas.
The musical won the Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival at the 2017 awards ceremony and is designed by Tom Scutt and is choreographed by Drew McOnie.
What is Jesus Christ Superstar about?
Beginning with the arrival of Jesus and his followers in Jerusalem, the story takes a new look at the struggles faced by both himself, and the infamous Judas Iscariot, using political themes and issues not explored in the Bible. Judas is seen here as more of a tragic antihero dissatisfied with how Jesus is leading and spreading the Word of God, rather than the cruel traitor we are used to seeing. Combining contemporary attitudes and modern slang, the song lyrics offer ironic allusions to modern life as we know it, in a new interpretation of the events of that fateful week.
